June Crochet and Knitting Theme: Pride

I crocheted a hell of a lot of things throughout May, and something that I think really helped with that was having AmiguruMay as a structure. I was still very new to crochet - and honestly pretty obsessed with it - so I was already over-excitedly crocheting tons of amigurumi, but the event gave me deadlines to work towards, along with ideas for things I wanted to try.

Something I’ve discovered lately with my resurgent interest in fibre arts is that there are just so many things I want to make! It’s really hard to narrow it down and focus on actually finishing a thing when I’m excited about the prospect of making so many other cool things as well! So I decided that giving myself a monthly theme and structure from now on, like with AmiguruMay, might be really helpful - and also potentially a lot of fun.

The theme I’ve chosen for June is Pride! It’s Pride Month, so honestly this theme felt pretty obvious; now is a great time to be making ALL the queer-themed projects, and let that queer joy flow freely from my crochet hooks and knitting needles! I’ve already got off to a good start by knitting a trans pride wall-hanging (although I actually made this at the end of May!), and crocheting some cute little Pride Bees. But I thought it might be fun to share some of the other things I intend to make this month - and then at the end of the month I can see how many I actually acheived!

MORE Pride Bees!

These things seem to be a right of passage amongst queer crocheters - substituting the black stripes on a regular bee for pride flags of all types! I’ve already made a start on making some trans pride versions of these; so far I’ve mostly been experimenting with size, shape and join stitches to see what looks best. Ideally I’d like to do a whole range of these little dudes, including lots of different types of pride flags!

Credit where credit’s due: While I’ve been improvising the main body of the bees based on photos I’ve seen of other crochet pride bees, I used this pattern by Hooked By Robin for the wings.

Rainbow Mesh Top - Pattern by Seyhall Crochet Design

This is the biggest crochet pattern that I want to make in June! I don’t make clothes very often, but I saw this on Ravelry and was completely captivated by it! It got me thinking that it might be really nice to wear for Pride this year - I’m not the kind of person who shows a lot of skin very often, but I had top surgery last year and I kind of love my scar! A gorgeous mesh top like this would be a great way to show it off!

Pride Flowers and Pride Hearts

In a similar theme to the bees above, amigurumi flowers and hearts are things I can easily see making in various different pride flag colours. The crochet flower pictured below is a great pattern by Stitch By Fay; I tried it for the first time last month, and fell a little bit in love with it! It’s completely no-sew - which appeals to me a lot as I don’t find sewing anywhere near as intuitive as crochet or knitting - and it works up really quickly. I’m envisaging making the petals in various different pride flag colours, which I think could look super cute!

As for the pride hearts - well I’ve never actually made an amigurumi heart before, so now seems as good a time as any to try it!

Pixie Pocket Pouch by Ola Ogunlolu (@therookiehooker)

Don’t really have too much to say about this one - I just stumbled across it while browsing Ravelery a while ago and thought it looked super cute! I think it’s going to be a really great quick make, and when it’s finished it’ll be perfect for keeping some of my excess crochet and knitting supplies in. Plus the pattern is free, which is even better!

Pride Hats

Hats are the last of the pride related things on my list. I’ve actually been making pride themed hats for years - knitted beanies are fast to work up, especially on circular needles so, as someone who prefers short to long projects, they’ve always really appealed to me. Recently I’ve begun crocheting top-down hats, which has honestly been a bit of a revelation! I’ve already been experimenting with a few different top-down pride hat designs, and I intend to make even more throughout June!
